Jesse Placher recovered $700,000 from a downstate nursing home for the death of a female aged 84 years with six children. She was living independently but was sent to a nursing home for therapy in advance of neurosurgery. She was known to have dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, and was discharged to the facility on a special diet with a plan to receive therapy focused on her dysphagia. The facility failed to provide her with supervision during meals and put her on a regular diet without any further studies or physician consultations. Less than two weeks after putting her back on a general diet, she choked during a meal and was found with her head on the table. The facility failed to properly respond to her choking incident, resulting in her immediate death.
