Kevin Golden settled a case against Alexian Brothers Medical Center and several doctors in the amount of 3,850,000. The 26-year-old plaintiff underwent gastric bypass surgery at Alexian Brothers Medical Center. The treating surgeon failed to recognize that a preoperative lab revealed that the plaintiff had a low B1 vitamin level going into the surgery. After the surgery, the plaintiff continued to suffer from a B1 deficiency. Approximately three months after the surgery, the plaintiff fell into a catatonic state. The plaintiff was admitted into Alexian Brothers Medical Center, and the doctors failed to diagnose her B1 deficiency. The plaintiff was transferred to a mental health unit, and the admitting doctor at the mental health unit performed an examination and diagnosed the plaintiff with a B1 deficiency. The plaintiff was replenished with B1. However, the plaintiff suffers from peripheral neuropathy in her lower limbs and short-term memory loss.
