Kevin Golden and Marissa Schostok represented the estate of a 29-year-old woman who died due to an untreated electrolyte imbalance. The plaintiff was taken to the emergency department at a Cook County area hospital after suffering a seizure. While at the emergency department, lab reports indicated the plaintiff had critically low potassium levels and critically high calcium levels. The plaintiff was discharged from the emergency department on that same day without receiving any treatment for their critically high calcium levels.
The next day, while at home, the plaintiff suffered cardiac arrest and died because of the untreated electrolyte imbalance. This case proceeded to trial for two weeks until the remaining defendants settled for their insurance policy limit, moments before closing arguments. The settlement proceeds will go to the decedent’s surviving mother.
