Jesse Placher recovered $1.5 million from a downstate hospital after the death of a woman aged 76 years, leaving a husband and three children. She was admitted to the ICU for hemorrhagic shock due to a spontaneous hematoma. She was later made NPO, and an NG tube was ordered. The NG tube was inserted into the right lung, and 10 ml of normal saline flush was given before the malpositioning was noted. She suffered PEA arrest, requiring 14 minutes of resuscitation. She survived but remained hospitalized, where she ultimately passed away approximately six weeks later.
